Her Spark asks Brandii JaVia, founder of Brown Girl Gamer Code, Five Questions. Here’s what she had to say!
Q1: Who is your favorite female role model and why?
My favorite female role models are Angela Bassett and Issa Rae. Angela Bassett has been one of my role models since I was a child. She is graceful, talented and her presence is powerful. I’ve been following Issa Rae since the debut of “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” her comedy web series. It has been inspiring to watch Issa build her brand from scratch and create opportunities for other people of color. Both Angela and Issa seem down to earth, and I will always admire them both!
Q2: What are you reading right now? Or what’s next on your reading list?
Intersectional Tech: Black Users in Digital Gaming by Kishonna Gray is the last book that I read; I highly recommend it! It discusses how the intersectional identities of race, gender, sexuality and ability are experienced by black gamers in the industry.
Q3: What’s the best career or academic advice you ever received?
The best advice that I have ever received is that it is important to advocate for yourself and look out for your needs. If your job is not willing to provide you with the tools that you need to be successful, it’s time to move on!
Q4: Her Spark’s mission is to equip girls with the STEM skills and opportunities to succeed in the careers of tomorrow – dedicated to solving gender disparity in computer science, engineering and technology careers. What does the Her Spark mission mean to you?
Her Spark’s mission speaks to the importance of making the STEM industry more inclusive for both women and young girls. It supports young girls’ career choices and goals by encouraging them to get involved in the industry. This one-of-a-kind nonprofit has the power to change someone’s life. It is special!
Q5: What is your favorite part of Summer Summit? If you haven’t attended before, what are you looking forward to the most?
My favorite part of Summer Summit is being able to foster connections with industry professionals and young girls who all have similar interests. In addition, I love that Summer Summit creates a safe space for females to discuss their experiences in the STEM industry.
